Have one running at my desk here 24/7...  I don't think I have moved the
volume knob in a year or so...

Try an attenuator...  I noticed that mine is very vulnerable to rf noise
from what seems to be everywhere...  They are a nice receiving radio, but
lack some of the noise filters and capabilities of the new technology...  I
have several high tension power lines 150 feet from the scanner antennas and
found they were an issue I needed to address...  2nd is that the radio might
need to be re-tuned...  Could be off frequency...  It should be sent in for
this type of service, not many have the capability or knowledge to do this
type of repair...  3rd thing is the squelch control in the radio...  I have
seen those go out as well and do just what you are describing...  If you can
find any of these new radios at stores, they were going for 60 bucks...  The
last ones I saw around here was at the Tandy Outlet store in Groveport Ohio
some time ago...
