You don't have to take a class, though many find it helpful.  YOu can study
on your own, using one of the several books available; one of the best is
Now You're Talking, 4th ed., available ar Radio Shack or through the ARRL
(www.arrl.org) for about $20.  You do need to take a written test for the
entry-level Technician test; I'm attaching a text file of locations, times
and contacts.

Once you have the license, you don't HAVE to do anything with it except
renew it in ten years (free), but you 'll probably want at least to get on
the 2-meter band to talk locally.  I've been a ham for 20 years and enjoyed
it all, especially the people.
