It has always been my understanding that trunked radio systems were
originally designed specifically for large cities or any place where a large
concentration of repeaters are needed. Instead of having 200 seperate
repeaters for 200 channels, you get 200 channels out of only 20 or so
transmitters using trunking. If you had 200 seperate repeaters within a
small enough area all on the same frequency band the intermod would probably
drive everyone to distraction. All the numbers I mentioned are arbitrary of
course.
