[Scan-DC] 1680 KHz AM

On my drive from Fredericksburg up to Arlington last evening, just after sunset, I monitored the station the whole way. They were playing what I would call "soul music." No commercials, ID, DJ, or anything. It got very slightly stronger as I drove north, but that could have been due to changing propagation conditions, not (just) a change in location. The signal was not much above the noise regardless of where I was.

Because I could hear it with a roughly constant signal strength over a large distance, that tells me a couple of things: The signal source is not located in that area (because it never got substantially stronger or weaker), and it must be running a fairly large amount of power (because I could at least hear it over a large distance).

This doesn't seem like a typical pirate operation. Most of those in the AM and FM bands are running relatively low power. I suspect we'll hear about FCC action sometime in the future. The FCC has been cracking down on pirate radio stations as a result of the PIRATE act and they've levied fines of over $2 million. They even threaten the landlords of buildings that house pirate operators, not just the operators themselves. However, so far they've just been going after FM pirates as far as I can tell.
