[Scan-DC] Detect-A-Pass E-ZPass Transponder Detector

So I bought one of the EzPass Detectors. It arrived last week, and I took it out on its first spin today, on my way to Dulles Airport to head out of town. Here's what I found:

- The device apparently works by detecting emissions from _your_ EzPass. It detects when your EzPass responds to an interrogation, apparently. So if you don't have an EzPass in your car, I don't think the detector will work.

- Otherwise, the detector seems to work well. It went off as I went through two regular EzPass readers along I-66 inside the beltway, heading west, as it should. It went off even though I-66 at the time was not HOT only, so they read your tag even when not technically needed.

- Did I detect any "hidden" EzPass interrogators? Yes! There was one about halfway down the Dulles Access Road (not the Dulles Toll Road). A reader mounted on the side of the road, along the Metro right-of-way. Then when I was going around the Dulles circle in front of the terminal, there's an overpass (where the signs are mounted) just before the road splits for arrivals and departures. There was an interrogator there. [I wonder if they use the combination of these two interrogators to determine if a car used the Dulles Access Road without actually going to the terminal? I guess that's not necessarily illegal (you could be going to other parts of Dulles), but it is additional information that could be used against you, in some cases perhaps. Or perhaps they just use it to measure how much traffic there is on the Access Road.]

Interesting so far. As I drive around the area in the coming weeks I'll see what else I find.

Andy

Andy

I'm inclined to get a detector just out of curiosity.

Black Helicopters aside, the PowerPoint shows that NYC uses ez-pass
detectors at fixed points to track vehicles entering and exiting the city
since almost everyone used ez-pass in NYC (most/all the bridges and tunnels
connecting to the island have tolls ). The license plate readers are not
100 accurate, to say the least.
