In around December 2005 (after Katrina) I drove a Red Cross vehicle known as an " ECRV " from Washington DC to Austin Texas. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ECRV
Somewhere along I-81 in Tennessee, I got caught up in the tailback from what turned out to be a fairly major wreck.
As 27MHz was one of the many radios fitted in the truck, I switched it on, listened to see if there was any chatter about the wreck, and only heard foul language and slang.
I then made an announcement regarding the wreck, in plain English. And for people who know me, you'll realize it was proper British English. I dropped the PTT and there was absolute silence on the channel... lasting for about 2-3 minutes. I made a second transmission, listened for a long while after, and slowly the chatter picked up again. I made a third transmission after the road was reopened. Nobody called me or acknowledged the message. That is the first and last time I have ever transmitted on 27MHz. I did leave the rig on for most if not all of the journey to Austin and back again.
I think I stunned them with by British accent and use of clear language? Or maybe they all thought there was 'skip' to the UK?
