In the early '60s when I was in JHS, I built a Realistic CB HT with one xmit channel and a slug tunable rx (had to open it to change frequencies). Had some fun talking to locals, but I soon discovered that I could hear hams on 10 and 15 meters. I already had a Lafayette HE something rx, but it was pretty deaf above about 20 MHz. And I was fascinated that I could walk around and hear hams with just an HT. Led me into ham radio and I'm still there.
