Hi Greg,
CB provides a means to hear the professional drivers who are on the road,
and to learn about accidents, locations of speed traps, and suggested
detours around traffic jams.
While many drivers will not answer a call from a nondriver, they can be
shamed into cleaning up their language with a "Does your mamma know you
talk that way on the radio," sending request to truckers to get out of the
fast line (Would you like this 4-wheeler to help you up the hill," and to
communicate mechanical problems, or dangerous drivers who are about to pass
the truck.
Every RACES, ARES, and MARS member should have a radio in their base
station, capable of operating on Channel 19 and be prepared to take traffic
(probably raw data, put it into message format (get the what, where, when,
and who), and to forward it to local law enforcement, or the emergency
management office.
In general raw data is of little value if you can not get a name, cell
phone number, and permanent address (license plate number and state of
issue are also important) so authorities can contact the individual,
confirm the reliability of the source, and to ask any follow-up questions.
CB also works well with familiarizing Scouts and young people on events on
the different possibilities for communications using a radio.
Talk is cheap, what have you done today to help your community and to
prepare for future emergencies.
