New radios for Danville police, scanners don't pick up frequency

DANVILLE, Va. (WDBJ7) People in Danville haven't been hearing police chatter on their scanners for a few months.
That's because the department got new radios.
These new radios provide better coverage and increase the ability to transmit in large buildings.
They leave virtually no dead spots in the city.
The department says it is a bonus that people can't listen in, but wasn't intended.
"There's been a lot of times, in the past, where people were able to monitor our frequency. It would prevent us from catching a suspect or made people aware of our presence, or our coming presence," says Sgt. Paul Deel with the Danville Police Department.
Eventually, Danville fire and emergency officials will have the same radios.
