Ed,

You are correct - 72 Charlie, Delta, Echo are patched into EMRC - that's why if you listen to it you can hear other consults go thru the channel or on the med radio channels. Things said on the 79 channels are not recorded - but it's just for hospital notification. For instance at Shady Grove the charge nurse has a portable radio at her desk. But if you consult they move into the med room behind where where the charge nurse desk is and they have a base station that looks like a telephone you pick up, but the consult is also heard thru the speaker.

If you listen regularly - you might hear a moco unit ask the dispatcher to relay transport info to the hospital because they are not picking up on the 79's. They are usually then advised to go thru EMRC to make notification so the dispatcher doesn't have to call the ER.

But don't believe EMRC Channels would be encrypted because the entire system would have the be done and many many jurisdictions are still using the older UHF med radios to do their consults.

This TG is under the control of the Maryland Emergency Medical Services' (MEMS) Emergency Medical Resource Center (EMRC). EMRC acts as a "traffic controller" for consults between the EMS units in the field and the appropriate medical facility. (It also records the consults, if I remember correctly). It does this statewide. So, I'd guess, every EMS unit and hospital in the state would have to have their radios encrypted in order for 72D to go encrypted.

I’m surprised this wasn’t done sooner, considering HIIPA restrictions on release of medical info.
