[Scan-DC] SDR and signal amplification / quality

Which dongle do you have? I have the Nooelec dongle and their up-converter. I purchased the aluminum cases for both. These cases help keeping local noise down so weaker signals could be heard. The USB cable is a source of noise also so I put a few turns of it through a snap on choke. Which frequency are you having trouble with, or are you talking about reception in general?

</div>I have been fooling around with SDR, and strength of the dongle to pull in
signal is not strong compared with an actual radio.

I am not all that technically inclined when it comes to radio signal and
signal amplification.

To pull in the same signal on an SDR dongle versus radio, do you need a
larger antenna, a pre-amp between the antenna and the dongle, or something
else?
