[Scan-DC] The demise of the DIY electronics shops

There was one (HeathKit) in NoVa on Route 1 just south of the beltway near
Beacon Hill. Personally as a teenager, I lived in the Radio Shack on
Connecticut Ave next to the Upton Theater. I would walk the ~5 miles from
Mount Pleasant at least once a week to see the "stuff". Like someone else
already said, I drooled when the new catalogues would come out and walk the
distance every day when they were expected just to get one. Those were the
days when EVERY RS staffer knew their stuff, and could always teach you a
trick or two. It was almost like even if they weren't a Ham, they STILL HAD
TO KNOW THE PRODUCT! Don't ask me why I remember, I guess it's from the
things he taught me, but Pete Poules was my goto on Connecticut Ave. When I
really saved my bus fare and after I learned to drive, I would go to the
Lafayette at Queen Chapel & Chillum in Queenstown, MD.

Greg, there was a Heathkit store over in NoVA somewhere, wasn't there?
Falls Church sticks in my mind?? I'm from Montgomery county and used to to
the one on Nicholsen Lane in Rockville... There was a guy who worked there
named Jim Dove; did you know him? Always wondered what became of him...
post-heathkit he had a little shop in damascus md called, I think, 4 county
electronics...

Heathkit had some good stuff... I still have one of
those digital clocks... One of the displays has a burned-out segment;
oughtta get it out and try to find the part for
it!

Regards,

Doug
