[Scan-DC] Red Unit of Circus Train Coming to DC Next Week

Thanks. I was wondering how they would get from Cincinnati to Cumberland. The old Parkersburg line has been cut, right? In that case, the train would have to come over Sand Patch.

I've recently been looking at the article about the Magnolia Cut-Off by Jerry and Brian Plant in the October 2002 issue of Railfan and Railroad magazine. Westbound trains are generally better for photography, but if this train runs by day, there should be some good pictures. You can get a good straight shot of it coming up the Barnesville grade.

Best wishes.

The train usually comes in via the old B&O into DC via Cumberland,
Brunswick, Point of Rocks, Gaithersburg, Rockville. There's been a couple
of instances where it has come in via NS through Manassas, but that's the
exception and not the rule.

Generally, the train gets set off at Benning Yard in Southeast under pretty
tight security. (A couple of coaches were vandalized (tagged) a few years
back in Benning.)

I think it spends about a month in the area, because it then goes to
Baltimore, and then eventually Fairfax (GMU).
