Local producer Marika Partridge started radio station KCAW in Sitka, Alaska in 1982. The station is now celebrating 30 great years of community radio there. Now Marika is working on another new station: Takoma Radio.
How can you create a low-power FM community station? What are some easy techniques for citizens to use for production?
Marika will share her thoughts and Brandy Doyle, policy director for Prometheus Radio Project, will speak more broadly about the community radio movement.
Hosted by Emily Friedman.
The Prometheus Radio Project is a non-profit organization founded by a small group of radio activists in 1998. Prometheus builds, supports, and advocates for community radio stations, which empower participatory community voices and movements for social change. To that end, they demystify technologies, the political process that governs access to our media system, and the effects of media on our lives and our communities. The primary focus is on building a large community of LPFM stations and listeners. Prometheus hopes this community will grow into a powerful force working toward the democratic media future. Toward that end, they support community groups at every stage of the process of building community radio stations, facilitate public participation in the FCC regulatory process, and sponsor events promoting awareness and support of media democracy and LPFM radio.
