Alan, the garbles that I'm hearing are garbled words or phrases in en clair transmissions (as opposed to entire transmissions or exchanges that are garbled). But you're right, there has been an increase in the use of encryption across entire (police) talkgroups in the Montgomery County system.
Dave, thanks for the thought but I don't think that's it either... While I've always felt that the audio quality itself on the -796 is not great, the problems that I mentioned originally have only recently surfaced - up until now the radio has always worked well (signal strength is high enough here in Gaithersbush that the radio will generally receive without an antenna attached). Sometimes I wonder if there's too much signal, I have to use attenuation on the GRE radio.
Which reminds me, the problems I've been having seem to be more with the Uniden than the GRE... a buddy in Wheaton has both a Uniden and a GRE and has noticed the same things as well. Both of us are in pretty good locations... he's in the Glenmont area; I'm in Gaithersburg near the end of Runway 32.
Thanks for your thoughts and interest... am hoping it all goes away magically after the Grande Re-Bandinge!
(but not believing...)
DK
