Since Joel's 'here' didn't come out, here's an article from the RR Wiki

The process is a royal PITA - like the article says, DON'T skip any 
steps, no matter how convoluted they might sound.

Now as for the other non-DMA scanners such as the 296, their links,

Keep in mind that in many (but not all) cases, updating the scanner for 
rebanding is a 2 step process - both the firmware AND software need to 
be rebanding capable. The rebanding article has links for that, too.
