John:
While I do not speak from firsthand experience, this is what I have heard of
the PSR800 by GRE:
The radio does decipher the hybrid FDMA system being used by PG County in MD
and Loudoun in VA.
The reason that it may be receive too well is that both systems are using a
much lower power to transmit than before, so you will not hear too much
outside of the general vicinity of the system.
These systems may or may not be the final versions of this P25 protocol (one
of the many reasons Uniden is not following too closely on GRE's heels). It
is also unknown if any other jurisdictions (and who) may be contemplating a
move to a similar system.
PG County fire has been transmitting on and off in the clear on the new
system (at least on 8A1 and 8A2), but I only receive it on my Unidens when I
am in the County. I am too far to see what Loudoun may be doing.
Hope this helps
JK

Subject: [Scan-DC] Pg county listening on the GRE scanner?
Greetings,
I am trying to get an idea of weather or not to buy the GRE scanner that can
get the new Pg county digital trunked system. I have spoken to a few folks
who have it and they say it is not always good at picking the system up.
Before I spend money on a radio I want to do my home work to see if it is
worth buying now or wait for another radio manufacturer to come out with a
unit that may do better. It is my understanding that the digital standard
was agreed on this summer so hopefully the radio makers are working on it.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts.
John
