[Scan-DC] US Open air traffic

I attended the practice day at the U.S. Open yesterday (no helicopters or blimps during the practice rounds). For those considering going today through Sunday, golf tournaments are outrageously strict about what you can bring in during tournament rounds. No cell phones, no cameras, no iPods, no PDAs, no sound-producing electronic devices, no bags, no purses, no umbrellas, no chairs, no food, no drinks, nothing. Don't try to bring a scanner.

It's possible that someone in the vicinity of (but not inside) Congressional could grab some frequencies via Close Call, but Congressional is surrounded by expensive neighborhoods. It didn't appear that there would be a good place to hang out. Plus driving into that area would be very difficult during the Open. We were transported by buses from the Montgomery County Fairgrounds, which is a long way away from Congressional.

Yesterday cameras were allowed (but they could not be in a case), but everything else was still prohibited. Bummer, because I stood next to lots of staff members using radios. Would have been cool to listen in.

Andy

I should correct that the news helicopter we saw is owned by US Helicopter,
not United. Mental cut and paste not working before coffee.

MetLife Snoopy 1 blimp is also in the area for the US Open. It is
flying out of Frederick. Snoopy 2 has been regularly using 123.325
for air to ground. 121.95 has also been reported for MetLife air to
ground.
