[Scan-DC] Home Patrol 1?

I agree with the radius being very generous, it seems to include anything
you might be able to receive within that radius, rather than which
transmitters are in the circle. I spent a good while blocking things out,
trying some new traffic I never had frequencies for, etc. when I first got
the HP1. Now I leave it set more or less the same (other than temporary
block-outs for state police when some local source causes interference).
The frequencies included are very extensive, I now listen to some nearby
sources I didn't know existed. It is very easy to change what is
included/excluded as well.

David,

HP-1 uses a "radius" method to decide what to listen to. Each radio
system is assigned a radius, which covers its intended area of
operation. For a county system, the radius is big enough to encompass
the entire county that the system serves. Since counties aren't perfect
circles, the radius will extend beyond the county in many directions.
That radius is fixed, in the database. When you provide a zip code, it
assigns a geographic point to that zipcode, and scans every system whose
intended area of operation overlaps that point, or overlaps any point
that is within a user-defined radius of your zip code point (0 - 30
miles). My experience so far is that the HP-1 gives, by default, way too
much to listen to, not too little. You will end up spending a fair
amount of time deciding what not to listen to.

You may need to cut and paste the link carefully since it is so long.

Here is a q:

Where I live (area code 21208) I straddle two different jurisdictions. I
actually live in Baltimore City - Baltimore County is in my back yard,
also in 21208 zip code. How does the HP-1 handle cross jurisdictional
issues across zip codes?

It would be nice to see a side by side comparison of the GRE 800 and

As one who has done extensive testing on the HP-1 (I had one of the
original factory prototypes right after the Uniden Open House last
year), yes, it is a super travel scanner. And as Andrew has rightfully
pointed out, GRE has their new competitor for the HP-1 - the PSR-800 out
now.In fact, I just got the final review for edits that we are doing for
the April issue of Monitoring Times from Bob last night. While I can't
share the whole review (I do like my job eh), one of Bob's observations
was "The overall performance of the new GRE PSR-800 is truly
remarkable." Given Bob's lack of love for the newer tech advanced
scanners in recent years, that says a lot. ;-)))Yes, they carry both the
HP-1 and the GRE-800 at Grove.Larry Van Horn, N5FPWBrasstown, NC USAMT
