Hi,
My intent is that you will need *both* the alternative cable, and a USB
convertor.

Based on the directions to physically chop off the USB connector and replace
with a serial connector, this is not the same thing as using a USB to serial
adapter. The former is purely mechanical, the latter actually involves
translating the USB protocol to the serial protocol. Bottom line is I don't
think using a USB-to-serial adapter would work. Instead, you must do the
mechanical replacement of the USB connector with a serial connector.
