[Scan-DC] Radio Shack Black Friday - PRO 106 & 197

The only difference in the two we've been discussing is that the PRO-106 is handheld and the -197 is base/mobile. They use the same circuitry. As you're probably aware, most (if not all) of the jurisdictions around here are now using 800 MHz trunking systems, and several of those are digital - these 2 radios will decode and receive those systems automatically (as will other radios built by Uniden). Some areas are simulcasting on the older systems, especially the fire services, but by and large the police have gone over to 800 exclusively.
I have both Uniden and Radio Shack Radios and am happy with both... the reason for the mix is strictly price... best price that I know of on either of the RS radios since they came out is $299 and that was two years ago at Xmas 2008... if this Black Friday thing is really correct, they haven't been that low since then until now. They started out at $499 and have dropped to $399. The Uniden radios seem to be around $500 and might be around for $475. Of course, the RS ones are sold through their retail stores (as well as online), where there's not much retail activity that I know of on the Unidens.
I don't want to sound like a Radio Shack commercial, but what it comes down to is that there's a significant tariff when going to 800, and the RS radios can be had for less. Strangely enough, Radio Shack also sells the GRE radios online, and they are the same units!
Hope this helps - or at least hasn't served to thoroughly confuse! :)
Regards,
Doug
