A group of criminals believed to be stealing gold from the homes of
Asians and Indians were using a scanner to help avoid capture, according
to a Monday Washington Post article: "Authorities try to salvage case in
Northern Virginia gold thefts."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/06/20/AR2010062003673.html

Not helpful news for those who don't want police communications moved to
closed systems (like PA) or encrypted.

Two sentences from the story:

found in a car:
"Inside was a police scanner tuned to Fairfax police dispatchers, a
laptop, a clipboard with blank invoices, binoculars and a GPS unit."

and in a hotel room:
"Police also found a gold testing kit, some wire cutters and a list of
Fairfax police radio frequencies."
