BETHESDA, Md. (WUSA) - There are iPhone apps that could give criminals a head start on the cops. But officers say it can also help fight crime.
9NEWS NOW worked with Montgomery County Police Officer Dana Stroman to test out one of the many police scanner apps.
"It's not uncommon for criminals or people involved in criminal activity to have that type of technology," said Stroman.
Some worry that criminals could get a head start on offers en route to a crime scene.
"We always wish that the bad guys weren't listening but that's just not reality," she said.
But she says people listening to these apps could also help fight crime.
"They will get the most current information that's coming out that's available," she said. "They may be able to get the description of a suspect."
Meanwhile, Montgomery County Police are adapting to these new apps, and using cell phones and more private radio channels to elude the bad guys.
