I just upgraded this past weekend. I have not done a side by side
comparison. The XT offers expanded digital trunked systems capacity limits
over and above the Model Ts. Still trying to figure out how to plug in the
complete Virginia STARS network into one system folder. Does anyone have a
solution? 'm using mine with the ProScan Version 4.3.0 software. To date I
have not seen any Uniden software. As far as I know the Model T software
from Uniden and Butel will not work with the XTs. The ProScan software
does.

I think the 396XT makes the most sense for "power users." If you're
happy with the 396T then you can probably stay with it. I haven't
compared the audio specifically but I guess it's about the same. The
power user features on the 396XT like NAC decode and control channel
output are great if you care about either. The backlight is superior
to the hard-to-read blue one on the 396T. The 396XT also has better
support for managing large trunked systems but that adds some
complexity in the user interface.
