There was a nighttime launch about three weeks before Gerald Ford died,
which was in December 2006. It was widely reported that the launch could be
seen up and down the East Coast. The reports were right. The trajectory for
that launch was such that about eight minutes after the launch, I could see
the light from the exhaust of the launch assembly. It was unmistakable.

I was on the steps of Alexandria's Masonic Temple. I had a pocket radio
tuned to WTOP, still on AM then which announced that the Shuttle launch had
gone off as planned.
