OSHA cites granite firm
By Thatcher Moats Times Argus Staff - Published: May 23, 2009
BARRE – A Barre granite company has been handed two citations for alleged safety violations after a worker was injured last month.
Houle Brothers Granite Co., which makes granite signs and memorial stones, was cited this week by the Vermont Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or VOSHA, for one alleged violation that was directly linked to the accident and one that was not.
On April 13, a Houle Brothers employee was working on top of a wire saw when he was hit by a crane, according to VOSHA manager Bob McLeod.
Rescue crews responded to the business on South Front Street and rescued the employee, Greg Florucci, who was elevated on a catwalk. The rescue workers used the crane as a high point for a pulley system, and used the pulley to lower him to the ground on a backboard and then transported him to Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin.
An investigator from VOSHA responded to the business after hearing the accident on the scanner and began an on-site investigation.
