b_thom, at some point you're going to want to program some more stuff in the future beyond what's in the V folders, or perhaps hook the scanner up to the PC. Unlike its GRE cousins, the RS models don't come with a USB converter, so you will need to buy one.
We have an object oriented scanners FAQ in the RR wiki, and the USB subject is addressed in the software article...

Wayll... can't say, exactly, as the only experience I had with digitals prior to the arrival of the 197 was with the Uniden ones. When I first went digital, I bought the Uniden because it had one band (a milair one, I think, that I've never listened to!) that the RS ones didn't. The audio quality on the Gen 1 Unidens wasn't that great, the RS was better. It improved significantly with the second generation. I kinda think that the RS ones still have a little better audio, and another advantage to them is that they come pre-loaded, so you can take it home and listen to it without a _whole_ lot of fiddling. I had a very steep learning curve when programming the first Uniden... in a backward way it was worth it because it helped me to understand the trunking concepts a bit better, but for the first 6 weeks I owned that 796 I was ready to pitch it out a window.
I bought the 197 because of the price / sale.
The technology is different on the -96, but I know a couple of people that have them and they are happy - I just looked on RS's website and they seem to be gone from there. Not sure what the stores are selling them for, but I'd say go for it if you can find one.
Any questions email me privately and we can get together by phone or something.
