It's not necessarily true that it's not economically feasible.  What 
are you willing to pay?

For $100 you can buy a portable digital TV receiver, which has a 
display and video frame memory.  Next year it will be cheaper.

What you need is the decoder chip set including audio AC-3 decoder 
plus speakers, but not the display and video memory.  You can buy the 
decoder chip set in a USB package that uses your computer's display 
and speakers for $50-60.  See for example

Is there a demand for an audio-only product?
