[Scan-DC] MoCo scanning

Sure thing... I bet I sent it just to you and not to the list... but anyway...

Yeah, the significant other bought the RS one a little over a year ago and it was for the same reason, no need to program. She had an issue with it last week, the display was showing all black bars but it seems to have fixed itself... not sure what it was, I was just looking into it when it fixed itself. Montgomery changed a couple of talkgroups awhile back and those changes were not incorporated into her scanner, but it didn't bother her.

The 396 I just bought came with a bunch of stuff in it, but none of it was local except maybe DC, and I can't remember about that. I think you get dragged into the programming no matter what, eventually.

As far as I know, Montgomery County hasn't changed anything on the 800 system, no real reason for your reception to have deteriorated... that's a bummer. Good luck - keep us posted on what you decide. By the way, you're certain it's not encrypted transmissions that you're hearing, right? I have heard times, on the police B and C channels, where one car / one side of a conversation will be clear and another side encrypted... but again, I don't listen to the PD that much (unless I hear sirens... which is becoming more and more frequent!)

Regards,

Doug

Thanks for the response. So I guess the Uniden's don't have anything
similar to the Radio Shack V-Scanner feature which allows for quick loading
of well known radio systems across the country? That was one feature that got me
to buy the RS, no programming issues. I mainly listen to police
and unfortunately most of the transmissions have become garbled over
the last few months and I think it is time for a new radio, be it another pro96
or something else. Trying to decide what would be best.

For fire, my main interest, I continue to listen on VHF as much as possible,
because you still get the tones on dispatch. Also, the VHF transmissions
are a split-second ahead of the 800 system (realistically this makes no
difference at all, but if one needs another reason to choose VHF, there it
is!) For 800 stuff, I have both the Uniden BC796 and the BC396T and I'm
satisfied with both of them, although I didn't want another hobby, which
turned out to be that of programming them. If I remember correctly, the
Uniden radios cover one band that the RS ones don't (maybe a milair band?),
and that was what pushed me over the edge... that and the fact that I didn't
want a portable and RS had no base/mobile radio at first.
