MEDIA ADVISORY

June 9, 2008

CONTACT: Lindy Dinklage, Army Public Affairs,

U.S. Army to unveil the first Future Combat System (FCS) Manned Ground
Vehicle, the Non-Line of Sight Cannon (NLOS-C) during June 11 Capitol
Hill event

WHAT: FCS is the Army’s core effort to modernize the force for
full-spectrum engagement in the 21st century – new FCS technologies
will be unveiled on the National Mall on June 11.

The NLOS-C is the first vehicle type in a family of eight new Manned
Ground Vehicle (MGV) types that are being developed. Operations in
Iraq and Afghanistan have shown that Soldiers want and require the
NLOS-C’s precision, long-range strike capability for urban operations
and operations in treacherous mountain terrain.

The NLOS-C represents a significant step in overall Army
Modernization efforts and FCS development. The NLOS-C is fully
automated, giving Soldiers the ability to engage targets four to six
times faster than current artillery systems.

The NLOS-C offers numerous advancements and benefits over current
systems, including; commonality, lethality, survivability, propulsion
capabilities, and reduction of crew size. In addition, its
hybrid-electric propulsion system requires less fuel and represents
Army-wide efforts to utilize hybrid technology in vehicles.

Other FCS capabilities on display include:

  Class I Unmanned Aerial Vehicle
  Class IV Unmanned Aerial Vehicle
Multifunction Utility Logistics Equipment Vehicle (MULE)
MULE Armed Recon Vehicle
Small Unmanned Ground Vehicle

Soldiers who have trained on these vehicles will be on-hand to
demonstrate the equipment and provide interviews.

Secretary of the Army Pete Geren and Army Chief of Staff Gen. George
Casey will be available for comment.

Media are welcome to film live from the event, with excellent views of
the U.S. Army’s latest technology on display in front of the Capitol
Building.
