Both radios will decode analog and digital CTCSS tones on analog
signals when the option is selected. The 796D search is quite slow but
the 396 should be fast. I have both the 796D and 996T. The 996T is
almost instantaneous whereas the 796D goes through a slower decode
process. Read your user's manuals as to how to activate the option.

>Hi gang, I have a question regarding CTCSS, or "Private Line". I'll take a look on RadioReference also, but am using all my resources! If a station uses a PL tone when it transmits, but I don't know what tone they are using, is there any way I can find out what the tone is while monitoring that station? (I have a BC-396 and a BC-796.)

Riderwood has 6 UHF frequencies (or 3 pairs): 452.500 / 457.500 MHz, 462.225 / 467.225 MHz, and 462.5 / 467.500 MHz that are used for security, maintenance, shuttle buses and the like. The 452.5 / 457.5 frequency is shared by some other system(s!) and I have been receiving one of those (completely unintelligible, I might add!) in my travels around Montgomery County. (I think it must be Capital Cab, looking in the FCC database.)
