Cohenner,
I think I know what you're trying to say, but reading
your post as is, it can be very misleading.
*Analog* Onstar may not work - as well as telemetry
and alarm services that use the *analog* cellular
(AMPS/IS-136) format as their air interface.
Onstar already has has been shipping GSM units for
many years now.
If you read over the petition
(http://wireless.fcc.gov/services/index.htm?job=about_cellular_reports&id=cellular)
you'll see that carriers will "not longer be required
to provide analog service."
It is possible (but not very likely) that some
carriers will continue to provide analog service.
If you're really interested, click on the "Report
Filing" button and read through some of the reports
filed.
A few are "whiners", the one from Verizon basically
says "good ridance."
It looks like Onstar was originally told analog
service would be around for a while. Then they found
out analog would be going away so they foot the bill
to convert their units to GSM.
Such is life, I guess.
BTW, I called Verizon several months ago to see if I
could activate an old analog phone. They would not
activate it. The rep told me that while the analog
service is still up, they can not gurantee me any
coverage.
Out in the sticks of Washington County, Atlantic
Cellular was willing to activate my analog phone with
no problems.
