[Scan-DC] local dealers - thanks

Doug,

I would not recommend the 396T or the Pro-96 for a non-techie, unless you or
someone else is prepared to offer a lot of programming support. These are
not easy scanners to program, which is partially a reflection of the fact
that public safety communications have become more complex (trunked,
digital, etc.). Once they are programmed, they can be easy to operate
though.

If you or your acquaintance are interested, www.rentscanner.com rents the
Pro-96 and 396T (as well as the AOR 8200MMKIII). A rental might help you or
your friend's friend figure out if the radio is a good fit. Rentscanner.com
is local, and if you pick up the scanner in person, there's no shipping
overhead. (Disclaimer: the rentscanner.com owner is me). Regardless, you may
want to suggest that the person find a way to try out a scanner first. Most
mail order places charge a hefty restocking fee if you return a scanner for
other than a hardware defect. Radio Shack doesn't, though, as far as I know.

73,
Andy

Thanks to all for your replies re the local Uniden dealer.

The way this came about was that a friend of a friend wants one, and once
again, the discussion became the Radio Shack one vs the Uniden.

The user in this case is a non-techie who wants to turn on the radio and
hear police and fire calls.

As happened the last time I got involved in something like this, Radio Shack
came out on top because of its lower price, local availability, and the fact
that the store will set it up for you.

Again, thanks everyone.

Regards,

Doug
