Thanks to all for your replies re the local Uniden dealer.

The way this came about was that a friend of a friend wants one, and once again, the discussion became the Radio Shack one vs the Uniden.

The user in this case is a non-techie who wants to turn on the radio and hear police and fire calls.

As happened the last time I got involved in something like this, Radio Shack came out on top because of its lower price, local availability, and the fact that the store will set it up for you.
