[Scan-DC] Railfans: extra rail traffic in Montgomery County?

The voice comm traffic is one side but there is
another side of the railfan hobby that monitors the
transmissions of track switches. Sounds kinda boring,
but when the information is overlayed a map, you can
infer a trains position and route.
The data mode is called ATCS. There is a yahoo group
for it. There is software that is similar to Trunker
that's use to monitor the traffic. You connect the
output of your discriminator into a sound card to
demodulate the data if you want to hear the local
traffic. You can switch modes and connect to servers
to "see" a region if you like.
The learning curve is a little steep and because of
all of the new people asking the same questions, it's
hard to get answers. I was lucky find somebody
locally and we set up a phone call, and he got me on
the right track. (Ha! I kill me!)
