[Scan-DC] Question re: cell-like antennas on gas meters and such

Hello:

In the Washington DC area, some residents can opted into a electric
company program which controls the electrical load available to their
homes. I think it may now be wireless. The idea is to restrict the
load to residential homes during peak hours during the day. But I am
not sure if the program and the wireless connections are still in use.

A picture would be worth the proverbial 1000 words.

I know in our neighborhood, we have old Richochet wireless boxes
hanging
from light poles and such. Google will pull up a few pictures of these
things. IIRC these were owned by Metricom, but they've since gone TU.
I
vaguely recall hearing that some utility services used these modems for
collecting customer billing info and such, but I don't have any current
references to back that up.
