A picture would be worth the proverbial 1000 words. 

I know in our neighborhood, we have old Richochet wireless boxes hanging
from light poles and such.  Google will pull up a few pictures of these
things.  IIRC these were owned by Metricom, but they've since gone TU.  I
vaguely recall hearing that some utility services used these modems for
collecting customer billing info and such, but I don't have any current
references to back that up.
