What a load of hooey! I won't even go into the political or entitlement
mindset side of this argument. I'll just stick to the radio aspects.

"its first responders would not be able to communicate with their
counterparts elsewhere in case of an emergency."

Did they forget about patching? How did they handle mutual aid prior to the
move to 800 when most were on 450-512 or VHF high and low bands? They are
simply playing to everyone's fears. "We will all die if X doesn't happen!"

What possible (legitimate) reasons could they have for keeping up with
everyone else except for bragging rights?
