You're absolutely right.  I've heard sonic booms several times as the space 
shuttle has returned from space.  It's always that sharp, boom-boom, each 
boom lasting a second or less.  I, too, heard the rumble last night here 
near Rockville.  Sure sounded like thunder to me.
