BREAKING GROUND TO EXPAND COMMUNICATION CAPABILITIES
*Media are invited to attend the ground-breaking ceremony and
need to contact PO Larry Chambers at 757-398-6269 for access to the
base.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. - A ground breaking ceremony to commemorate the
facility expansion project at Coast Guard Communications Area Master
Station Atlantic (CAMSLANT) in Chesapeake, Va., is scheduled for
Tuesday at 11:30 a.m.

Vice Admiral Vivien S. Crea, commander of the Coast Guard
Atlantic Area, will preside over the ceremony. Remarks will also be
given by Congressman J. Randy Forbes, representative of the 4th
District of Virginia, followed by the ground-breaking.

Driven and funded by the Coast Guard's Integrated Deepwater
System program, this $3.4 million construction project is a major
milestone in upgrading the Coast Guard's command, control and
communications (C3) infrastructure. Increasing CAMSLANT's facility
footprint by 9,800 square feet, the expansion will provide needed
space to allow installation of new and upgraded systems that will
significantly enhance C3 between operational commanders, other
government agencies and the maritime public.

The unit serves as a gateway that provides voice and data
communications for Coast Guard cutters and aircraft operating from the
northern Atlantic to the deep Caribbean and beyond. Two of the most
important services provided by CAMSLANT are long range high frequency
(HF) and Internet protocol (IP) communications.

Home to nearly 140 active duty Coast Guard personnel, CAMSLANT
operates around the clock, 365 days a year, supporting the
communications needs of the Coast Guard and broadcasting weather and
other important safety of life at sea information to mariners across
the waters.

Upon project completion, scheduled for March 2007, CAMSLANT's
new facility will host the operation and maintenance of the new
communications systems that will be critical to fully integrate the
Coast Guard's current and future fleet and aircraft with shore
information systems.
