It is still possible to achieve interoperability between agencies, even
if the radio systems are not directly compatible. There are several
solutions available now that provide interoperabililty by using systems
that act essentially as conference bridges. It is even possible to
integrate radio system users with IP phone users with these systems.
IP phone users can use a 'softkey' on their phone as PTT, just like
they are using an HT. One such product that I have direct experience
with is called WAVE from a company called Twisted Pair. They are doing
very well with their solution in government and public safety
organizations.

Subject: [Scan-DC] pure speculation
Looking over the 2001 Inaug issue on the CHM website, you can't help
but
wonder at the number of agencies and organizations that are going to be
involved
now; but a question popped up while I watched WJLA last nite talking
about
bringing in cops from other jurisdictions; if they all end up using
their own
'home' frequency (for lack of a better word), interop goes right out
the window.
Will the RINS and/or ICALL frequencies get pressed into service? It
would seem
a natural, at least for those jurisdictions (such as Montgomery county)
that are
already on 800.
Just food for thought.
