[Scan-DC] Computer Aided Scanning recommendations

Hi Gary,

You've left out the most important part of your request... what scanner will
you be using? I've been shot down for recommending Ben Saladino's
TrunkManager/RadioManager before, but this **will** do exactly what you're
asking if you're using a Uniden, and you add one more program, RecAll Pro.
RadioManager (http://www.bensware.com/rm2002.htm, $40.00 shareware) will
provide the computer control of your Uniden Scanner, and will send the text
display info to RecAll Pro (http://www.sagebrush.com/recpro.htm, $29.95
shareware) a great date and time stamping audio recording application.
While your mileage may vary, I get the following results with RecAll Pro:

Mono Setting;
Resolution: 8-bit
Channels: Mono
Default Sample Rate: 8000
Default Compression: GSM 6.10 8,000 kHz, Mono
Default Byte Rate: 0.093 MB/min
(30 min/2.8 MB; 60 min/5.6 MB; 12 hr/66.9 MB; 24 hr/133.9 MB; 1 wk/937.3 MB)

Stereo Setting (I sometimes use this setting when I record two scanners at
the same time... one on the left channel, and one on the right channel, but
I don't know if the text output works this way because I'm not scanning when
I do it this way);
Resolution: 8-bit
Channels: Stereo
Default Sample Rate: 8000
Default Compression: MPEG Layer-3 18 kBit/s, 8,000 Hz, Stereo
Default Byte Rate: 0.129 MB/min
(30 min/3.9 MB; 60 min/7.7 MB; 12 hr/92.7 MB; 24 hr/185.4 MB; 1 wk/1297.8
MB)

Both RadioManager and RecAll Pro have shareware restrictions, but you can
still give them a spin and see if they'll do what you want without the
registration. This is just my suggestion based on how I do what you've
asked. Naturally, use at you own risk.

Subject: [Scan-DC] Computer Aided Scanning recommendations

I am looking for user opinions on "Computer Aided Scanning" software, that
is software that will log and record via the soundcard in an unattended
operation. Then when I come home I can play back all in a time compressed
format, and I will know when a recording happened and on what freq.

My primary interest is Mil Air (UHF and VHF) scanning and searching.

I have looked at some software but although they record it looks like on
playback you can just pick one entry. I want something to play back
everything I select.

Several years ago I was doing this with a PRO-2006 with a CE-232 interface
and a Windows program I developed myself. I sold the 2006 a few years ago. I
have thought about writing a program for the radio I currently use for
monitoring (Watkins-Johnson 8618B-1) but it would cost me a bit to get a PCI
GPIB controller for my PC and update the development software for XP. So I
am also looking for recommendations for a good receiver also for MilAir
(don't think anything will come close to the scanning speed, sensitivity and
selectivity of the WJ though).

Thanks,
