Absolutely correct Shawn. And in my original post below I did not say
that the equipment had to be P-25 capable, only narrowband complaint
within current NTIA guidelines. ;-)
What does this narrowband mean? Narrowband refers to the narrowing of
the channel spacing being each designated frequency assignment.
Previously, the spacing between each frequency assignment was 25 kHz.
The new "narrowband" channel spacing reduces the spacing requirements to
12.5 kHz between each allotted frequency assignable and decreases the
channel bandwidth to <11 kHz. Of course, the government always gives
themselves some wiggle room. From chapter 5 of the NTIA Redbook they say
that radios like th Scope Shield II type are exempt from this process.
In fact, any military equipment used for "tactical and/or training
operations." Boy I see a lot of holes in that for DoD. ;-)
If you want to learn more about this refarming of the 162-174 MHz
spectrum which has to be narrowbanded no later than 1 Jan 2005 try the
link at:

equently%20Asked%20Questions.pdf
So remember to start doing some bandscanning after the 31 Dec 2004
midnight deadline. Should be interesting to see what is left standing in
our local 162-174 MHz environments.
Have fun all, 73 and good hunting,

Larry (and all),
Yes, but that doesn't necessarily mean P-25.
Narrowband (2.5 kHz) analog audio can used.
The ruling also does not "force" the user to use
narrowband.
It only means the equipment must have the ability to
go to narrowband mode. It doesn't mean they have to
use it.
