      Coast Guard CAMSLANT Changing Command

PORTSMOUTH, Va., -- Cmdr. Steven Godfrey will assume command of
Coast Guard Communications Area Master Station Atlantic (CAMSLANT)
during a change of command ceremony Thursday, at 10 a.m.

Godfrey will relieve Cmdr. Leonard Ritter to assume
responsibility of the largest tactical network and messaging center in
the Coast Guard. CAMSLANT offers a full spectrum of
telecommunications services including high frequency radio and
satellite message delivery for over 1,900 tactical and shore-based
Coast Guard units; multi-threaded global maritime distress and safety
services; multi-path secure and non-secure radio and satellite to
support voice and data requirements; and a 24-hour customer help desk.
These services directly support the Coast Guard's primary missions of
safety of life at sea, environmental protection, maritime law
enforcement, maritime homeland security, and defense readiness.

Godfrey's extensive career began when he enlisted in the Coast
Guard from Salisbury, Md. in 1978. Since graduation from Officer
Candidate School in 1985, he has served multiple tours at Coast Guard
headquarters, operations officer aboard the Coast Guard Cutter
Sweetgum, team member on a Workstation III acquisition team at TISCOM,
deputy director for Command, Control, Communications, Computers and
Intelligence Systems (C4I) at Joint Interagency Task Force East, and
as executive officer of CAMSLANT. Commander Godfrey is transferring
to CAMSLANT from his recent assignment as the Coast Guard's first
liaison officer to the Naval Security Group Command Headquarters at
the National Security Agency.

Godfrey's personal decorations include the Joint Meritorious
Service Medal, three Coast Guard Commendation medals, the Coast Guard
Achievement Medal, two Good Conduct medals, two National Defense
medals, the Coast Guard Humanitarian Service Medal, Honor Graduate,
USCG Basic Training as well as several unit awards.

The change of command ceremony is a time-honored product of the
rich heritage of naval traditions. It is a custom wholly naval,
without an equivalent counterpart in the Army or Air Force. Custom has
established that this ceremony is formal and impressive - designed to
strengthen the respect for authority, which is vital to any military
organization.
