John,

Use the main air return duct chase to run your coax. Make sure that you
secure the cables just before they make the drop so the strain isn't on the
fittings.

I installed a disk-cone scanner antenna, an Antenna Specialist 5 dB UHF
antenna for GMRS with a 1'x1' sheet-metal ground plane and a 4' CB firestick
with 4 102" wires as a ground plane in a townhouse attic for a friend when I
was with Herndon REACT years ago. She got very good reception and was able
to hit the DC repeater from Burke with no problem. We did have to put a TVI
filter on the CB to mitigate local interference.

Good morning. My wife and I have purchased a five-level townhouse in
the Falls Church area of McLean. We will be moving into it in early
August. This creates issues for the redeployment of my "bunker"/radio
shack. I have picked out a lower-level room in the townhouse to serve
this purpose, but I am anticipating that the running of coaxial cable
from the attic to the lower level will be at best challenging. I
hoping that there will be some sort of empty space or drop between walls
centered next the stairwell allowing cable to drop the entire distance.

I am looking for two recommendations from either professionals or the
local scanning enthusiast community: first, what are your
recommendations of what brand/model of omni-directional continuous
coverage antenna works best in an attic environment (mounting and
performance)? I will be operating a BC785D, BC950, and IC-PCR1000. I
will also need a separate set-up for HF. Most likely it will be some
sort of skywire dipole for an IC-R75.

Second, I am in dire need for a name of a company or individual who does
knows how to properly install radio antennas and who can do a reasonably
professional job of cabling. I have used both Davis and Fairfax Antenna
in the past, but I feel that they have no real knowledge of amateur or
professional radio antennas. I have always been suspect if my antennas
had been properly installed and aligned for best performance.

Please feel free to respond via the list or privately. Again, I plan to
do this installation in early to mid August. The location is near Kirby
and Great Falls Streets.

Thanks,

John M. Nash
