What most fascinates me is the over-kill security in so many of the
non-critical buildings. One now has to go through airline level
security to get into the Botanic gardens. It's amazing watching them
hassle little old ladies that are so frail they couldn't be a threat if
they wanted. They had one Granny in tears while I was waiting to get
in.
My coat and bag were off in the X-ray but even with my pockets empty I
kept setting off the magnetic alarm. I told them it was the military
buckle on my belt. They used a hand wand which confirmed the buckle.
I guess to be sure I also didn't have bobby-pin, they made me take the
belt off then go though again. Remember this is to get in the Botanic
Garden.

Security Efforts Turning Capital Into Armed Camp

WASHINGTON, Feb. 21 - An antiaircraft missile, ready for use, sits atop
a
federal office building near the White House. Devices that test the air
for chemical and biological substances are positioned throughout the
city. Subway stations are now equipped with "bomb containment" trash
bins. A major highway that runs by the Pentagon is being rerouted
several
hundred yards away. A security wall is going up around the Washington
Monument.
Day by day, the nation's capital is becoming a fortress, turning a city
known for graceful beauty into a virtual armed camp. In response to the
Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, federal security agents along with
their counterparts in the Washington, Maryland and Virginia governments
began a huge effort to build permanent safeguards for the capital area's
most important buildings and monuments.
