Another (somewhat related) cause is a VHF-Lo opening, you were seeing
interference from another station on Ch 2. As there are offsets between
adjacent stations on the same channel (10 or 20 kHz from memory, it's
been a long time since I did any TV DXing) this type of interference
pattern is common when that happens.
