I'm sure they hire people who do nothing but "what if" scenarios. If a Dominion
Power lineman's overtime is expensive, what do they think the
expense will be for putting these out of state linemen up in motels, providing per diem
and travel will cost? In its finite wisdom Dominion Power laid off a significant
number of employees last year and offered early retirements. Apparantly their recent
focus has been on acquiring some nuclear facility in the northeast and neglecting in
state infrastruture needs/repairs/hardware replacements. Like the railroads much of
their infrastruture needs replacing/upgrading. Meanwhile top management draws
multi-million dollar a year salaries. Now that the public is outraged at 1 1/2 weeks
of no power and counting, Dominion Power has established a toll free number you can
call, assuming you have a telephone that works or can borrow one, and by entering your
address you will be provided an automated estimate of when your power will be
restored. Dominion Power doesn't know. If their estimate is wrong, then call back and
they will give you another best guess date. It is a public pacifier in an attempt to
stymie bad press. Just imagine the additional damage if this hurricane had been a
category 2, 3 or 4. It would be funny if such a significant number of people were not
suffering especially in the Richmond area.
I understand that Pike Electric from Mt. Airy, NC, basically is a full time Dominion
Power sub-contractor! Dominion Power Linemen are laid off and others given early
retirement and then their work is contracted out paying overtime, per diem, and
travel. Maybe I'm missing something but that doesn't to make good financial sense to
me.
