All,

For several years I've been aperiodically logging aircraft using the WAMO
callsign flying into/out of Andrews AFB. I had spelled it as WHAMO and someone (
don't remember who) corrected me as said it stood for the Washington Area
Meteorologic Office. On some old callsign lists the callsign was also listed as
belonging to the NEST-Nuclear Emergency Search Team.

I was doing some research on the Dept of Energy sites and ran across the
DOE's Aerial Measurement System which flies three fixed-wing and two helos
outfitted with special sensors and measurement equipment. Their mission is to fly at
low levels over nuclear emergency sites measuring air samples and other
indicators as part of the Federal Radiological Monitoring and Assessment Center
(FRMAC) response to a nuclear/radiological emergency. Their official name is the
Washington Aerial Measurement Operations (WAMO).

Over the years I've heard two of their fixed wing (Beech-200/C-12 types) and
at least one of their helos operating out of Andrews. I'm not sure if they are
based there but I would guess they are. I'm also assuming that they would
deploy from Andrews to any geographic area that required their services.

So if any of you hear the WAMO callsign that's who they are.
