Cathy,
I have to agree with BoteMan regarding his post. I'd like to add that I own
the 250D and Montgomery's system is loud n clear on that radio. Just a FYI,
that all Montgomery's low band radio activities are simulcast on its digital
system except fireground ops and certain local gov't ops. They even
simulcast PG Co Fire's Channels 1, 2 and 4 from time to time.
I do not yet own the 785, as I just don't need it, but I'd highly recommend
the 250d. You can program it via computer and control it that way, too, if
you so choose. You do not need to keep it next to a PC for it to do its
work. Its more than capable of operating on its own once programmed and I
take it to work with me every morning in the car. I commute from Montgomery
County all the way out to Herndon, VA and it keeps up with everything in
between with absolutely no trouble. When in the house I use it to listen in
on the surrounding systems also with no trouble.
As for the 785d unit, I could only tell you that it appears to do all the
same things as the 250d, w/o the portable functionality. If you have no
plans to utilize a digital scanner in your car and on foot, then I'd
recommend the 785d unit. Apparently, the scanner is designed for mobile and
base use as BoteMan mentioned, so again, if you don't plan on carrying it
around, then go for the 785d. If however you think you'll be happy with
something you can carry around then I'd go with the 250d. The reception,
selectivity and sensitivity on the 250d is kick ass at its worst! So that
tells you that right off the bat its a good quality scanner for all the
features that build from there. In addition to all of the above, I can tell
you that both scanners will receive C.A.P MilAir freqs. I listen in
sometimes to those comms, too.
Also, the 250D is pretty durable. I dropped the darned thing on the marble
floor at work on Friday morning from my belt and not a scratch was found on
the unit, even though it landed face down. I thought I busted the display,
but it was fine.
I hope that helps you out.
Andy
